American Boer Goat Association (ABGA) Sanctioned Show Rules
Eligibility of Animals: All goats must be registered in the herdbook of a recognized association before time
specified by the show. Recognized associations include ABGA, International Boer Goat Association, USBGA
and the Canadian Boer Goat Association. Original registration certificates are required, though a copy of a
Registration Application, stamped with the date received by one of the listed associations, can be accepted
for kids less than 3 months of age. Animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor and must have
been owned by the exhibitor on or before date determined by said show. Throughout the ABGA and JABGA Show rules the term exhibitor is defined as the owner of the animal listed in the ABGA registry shown on entry deadline. All goats must be appropriately identified and comply with USDA Scrapie Eradication Program Guidelines. Call 1-866-USDA TAG (873-2824) or follow this link for more information:

Show Focus: The American Boer Goat Association will accept and permanently record all wins in shows
that have been determined to have met all requirements (as stated below) for ABGA Sanctioning. Failure to
comply with ABGA Show Rules will result in the loss of funding and future sanctioning. ABGA requires that
an ABGA Sanctioned Show Application be submitted to the ABGA office no less than 60 days prior to the
show. NO SHOWS WILL BE SANCTIONED DURING THE WEEK OF THE ABGA NATIONAL SHOW.
Purpose: Sanctioned shows are intended to provide producers a benchmark of their breeding program as it
compares to the breed standards and other producers breeding programs. It is also an important advertising
and marketing system for genetics developed by producers. Therefore, the main focus of sanctioned ABGA
shows is the genetic improvement of the breed and promotion of goat industry. Use of costumes and/or
apparel is not permitted during an ABGA Open Sanctioned Show.
Entries: Any show receiving ABGA sanctioning shall be open to all exhibitors; however, the show
representatives may use their discretion and have the right to ban exhibitors if they consider it necessary for
the good of the show. There should be no limit on the number of animals that can be entered in a class by
an exhibitor, unless the sponsoring show deems this limit necessary. Any show limiting the number of entries
must state this in their rules. ABGA sanction shows can not require animals to sell in a sale as a condition of
participating in the show. When the original registration certificates are presented at check-in the tattoo of
each animal should be recorded so that it may be displayed on the results that are turned in to the ABGA
office.
Ennobled Herd Book Points: Only goats entered under their ABGA registration number and presenting
their ABGA Certificate of Registration will be eligible to earn points for their actual placing in the show as
described in the ABGA "Criteria for Ennoblement of a Boer Goat."
Tattoos: All goats must have legible tattoos or other means of permanent identification consistent with its
registration certificate or the animal will be disqualified. Point winners from each class must have their
tattoos read and recorded. The judge will be responsible for ensuring that the tattoos are read and properly
recorded. The show secretary will be responsible for recording the tattoos and informing the judge as to
which goats will need to be checked. If the animal has a microchip as its permanent identification, the
exhibitor is responsible for providing a microchip reader.
Computing Ages: Birth dates, as listed on the registration certificate, will be used to determine the class
divisions. In order to calculate class breaks, take the show date and count back to the birth date to determine
the age and the class for the animal.
Classes: All animals must be registered purebred, fullblood or percentage blood Boer goats. Divisions are
according to the chart below. Bucks 96.86% and lower are not eligible to be shown. Progeny of fresh does
will NOT be allowed in the ring. At the discretion of the judge and the superintendent, goats may be let loose
in the ring as a function of judging. The Champion and Reserve Champion classes will be chosen from the
first and second place animals in that division of the show.
Animal Division Percentage of Boer
Percentage Does 50% - 88%
Fullblood/Purebred Does 93.75% and higher
Fullblood/Purebred Bucks 96.87% and higher
